It may be tremendously difficult to cope with an oil spill, regardless of where it originated. Oil is a toxic material that causes harm to people, animals, and the environment. It is also combustible and has the potential to cause long-term health issues. You must respond swiftly to an oil spill, and only attempt to control the problem areas if you are qualified and the situation is safe.
At ICE Cleaning, we provide quick and efficient services for cleaning up oil spills. Our skilled technicians have undergone specialised training and can handle a variety of scenarios, including soil pollution and water clean-up.

As part of our treatments, we use industrial-grade technology to extract all the oil from the location and utilise chemical treatments to eliminate all remnants. Afterwards, our professionals shall properly disinfect the affected area using the TORIK Cleaning system.
Who is responsible for cleaning an oil spill?
Whether the incident is related to a domestic oil tank or a workplace accident, the responsibility falls onto the individual responsible for poor maintenance or health and safety.
If you own a heating oil tank, any repair costs and oil decontamination fall to you. You will also be legally obligated to inform your local council, water services, and oil cleaning specialists. If your heating tank is insured, you must contact your insurance company about the incident.
However, if the spill occurred in the workplace, the employer may be responsible. A spillage in the workplace could have happened due to poor health and safety practices or a lack of maintenance on storage tanks, transportation devices, or manufacturing machines. Depending on the situation and your negligence, you could receive a fine from the council or any neighbours affected by it.
What should you do when oil spills?
If you suspect that you have a spill, you should inform the local authority, water services, and your insurance company immediately. Your council can provide details on whom to contact to contain the spill, but you are ultimately responsible. In the meantime, you must follow these steps:
- Ventilate the area if the oil tank is in a contained area within your home.
- Avoid touching the oil with your skin or clothing
- Ensure your hands are clean if you touched the oil — do not smoke, eat, or drink.
- Switch off the oil supply
- Identify the source of the leak
- Place a bucket under the dripping oil if possible
- Contain the oil spill with absorbent materials if you are qualified and it is safe
- Check the levels of oil to understand how much may have been lost
- Do not try to clean the spill yourself, either with water or chemicals
- Quarantine any soiled items or fabrics
- Keep a record of any damages or payments you may be required to make for your insurance company

How to prevent an oil spill
There are some things you can do to prevent an oil spill from occurring at home or in the workplace. You must always prioritise your safety, and help vulnerable people leave the area to avoid sickness.
Spill prevention at work
- Ensure that a spill risk assessment is enforced at least once a year
- Reduce the use of oil you use in the workplace, such as upgrading equipment and switching to other forms of materials
- Maintain and inspect the equipment often to spot leaks or breaks early
- Review all submitted incidents that involve a spill to identify the most problematic areas
- Ask your employees what you feel you could do better to prevent spill
- Provide spill kits and PPE
- Maintain or replace storage containers often
- Review your emergency response plan
- Conduct staff training and courses concerning health and safety as well as an emergency response
Spill prevention at home
- Conduct maintenance on the tank and ensure all fittings are in good condition
- Be present when your tank is being refilled
- Ensure your tank is away from high-risk locations, or move it above ground
- Check your tank is compliant with local building regulations
- Conduct a monthly inspection
- Keep notes of when your oil level drops suddenly, you detect odours or hear odd noises
- Have a domestic oil spill kit
