What types of floods are there?
You can experience six different types of flooding, which could affect or damage your home and pose a risk to your health. You will be alerted of the source of the flood when you receive a warning from the Met Office.
Coastal flooding
Flooding can occur when dry or low land near the sea becomes overwhelmed with high tides and excess seawater. Weather or tidal conditions also accelerate the speed of flooding like storms. Coastal flooding is dangerous as seawater naturally erodes impermeable surfaces and causes structural damage.
River flooding
When an area around the flood experiences large amounts of rainfall, the river will eventually rise and cause the soil to become saturated. This can occur at any point in the river, including the source or further down the channel. This type of flooding is the most common in the UK.
Surface water flooding
This type of flooding can occur anywhere across the UK, even in low or medium-risk areas. Surface water flooding is more likely to happen if there are saturated soils or blocked drains. Impermeable surfaces in urban areas are also more likely to experience surface water flooding.
Reservoir flooding
These floods are rare due to the water body's artificial nature, but if there is a failure in the structure, water can escape the reservoir and cause flooding. This water is deep with fast currents, so they are dangerous to experience.
Groundwater flooding
Water that is stored underground steadily rises to the surface when it rains. Heavy rainfall or extreme storms can cause this to rise above normal levels, meaning communities at the base of steep slopes or high hills are at an increased risk of groundwater flooding.
Sewer floods
When sewage drains become full or blocked due to heavy rainfall, this type of flood can occur, and result in local contamination. Drinking water is also at risk of being infected with sewage water and could cause severe illness upon ingestion.
What types of floodwaters are there?
The type of water present in a flood can differ depending on the source and how it occurred. Floods caused by blocked drains and sewage will contain blackwater, whereas floods from natural areas such as rivers or reservoirs may be greywater. Knowing the type of flood could identify the water and the extent of cleaning required if it is in your property.
Clearwater
This water is often clear of contaminants or waste, but it can still damage property through general leaks or appliance breakage. Clearwater also encourages mould to grow without the presence of pollutants.
Grey Water
This water includes waste flushed from your home, often from sinks, washing machines, bathtubs, and showers. This will rarely include wastewater from a toilet, but this can vary. Grey water collects in water butts in gardens or allotments.
Blackwater
This wastewater comes from bathrooms and toilets that contain human waste. Water from dishwashers or kitchen sinks can also be considered blackwater due to the contaminants and grease in the pipes. This water type could potentially cause severe illness or disease when encountered.
