As part of our solutions, we treat all surfaces within the home if it is safe to access them, including ceilings, walls, floors, and upholstery. Our experts treat the air and flush out any dangerous chemicals and toxins lingering on your property. We always remain on-site until you are satisfied with the results of our work and will assist with disposing of any contaminated objects.
What other risks are present after a fire?
Your house is vulnerable to multiple risks that we may not consider other than soot and general smoke damage. One of those risks is mould, which is not often associated with house fires. However, if the fire was extinguished with wet solutions or chemicals, a significant amount of warmth and moisture will be present. This creates the perfect home for mould to thrive, potentially damaging your home further.
Although mould is not as dangerous as soot to the human body, it could still trigger symptoms and contribute to the deterioration of your home. Mould can begin growing within 48 hours after a fire, so it is imperative that you ventilate your home and place a dehumidifier in damp areas.
Where will soot collect?
After a fire is extinguished, you may see soot across your home. These fine particles settle in clusters, leaving behind black residue that sticks to various surfaces. Any object exposed to heat from a fire likely contains the chemicals found in smoke and soot, and you will notice a strong smoke scent.
However, there are more probable places where you could soot collecting due to the materials in your home. You are more likely to see soot:
- At the base of a door due to carpet filtration
- On your walls and ceiling — smoke travels upwards, and the surface temperature can affect how soot settles
- Around light switches or outlets due to electricity present that attracts these fine particles
We cover all areas in the Borough of Tunbridge Wells in Kent, including:
- Ashurst
- Collier's Green
- Groombridge
- Hartley
- Hawkenbury
- Horsmonden
- Langton Green
- Pembury
- Royal Tunbridge Wells
- Rusthall
- Sandhurst
- Sissinghurst
How is soot caused other than a house fire?
If you have not experienced a house fire and spot soot in your house, this could be an indicator of an underlying issue. Because soot is incompletely burnt carbon, it might emanate from somewhere where something has charred significantly.
Scented oils and candles are good examples of incomplete burning. You may see yellow flames producing black smoke as they burn, and if placed close to a wall or surface, a stain is left behind. This is a red flag of soot particles lingering in your home that will remain for months.
Soot in your home could also mean your chimney or furnace flue needs cleaning. When coal and wood burns in a fireplace or furnace, the incomplete carbon settles inside the chimney. It coats the inside in soot, slowly blocking the air circulation and pushing carbon monoxide back into your home.
